Last week we held another workshop with children from the Sant Joan de Déu hospital. At the start of the workshop it was explained to the children that they were going to try out painting with scissors- they were to create their own piece of art inspired in Henri Matisse’s work. We told them that Matisse had been a very important artist that, like them, had started to paint as a young child when in recovery from an operation. He had had appendicitis and his mother had given him some colours so that his time in the hospital would be a little less tedious. The goal of the workshop was to create simple collages based around contrasted colours. We thought very carefully about how to create an image that was as abstract as it was accurate, thinking also about how to combine different shapes and tones. You can see the result here.
